Bettye Hughes

Bettye Hughes Memorial service for Bettye Jean (Rushing) Hughes, 85, of Chickasha, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday November 26, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. J. Pat Kennedy will officiate.
Bettye was born the daughter of Luther D. Rushing and Lula Loretta Smith Rushing on July 20, 1933 in West Lincoln, MS. She died on November 16, 2018 in Chickasha.
Bettye was born and raised on a farm in Lincoln County, Mississippi. She was the third oldest of 10 brothers and sisters. She attended West Lincoln schools where she graduated as Salutatorian of her class in 1951. She attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College where she obtained her Associate Degree in 1953 before attending Mississippi State College for Women and the University of Southern Mississippi, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science Degree and teaching certificate in home economics. Following her graduation, Bettye moved to Lake City, Florida where she taught for two years before accepting positions with the Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in North Carolina. When she felt the call to go back to teaching, friends in Kansas knew of a school in need of a home economics teacher so she moved to Fort Scott, Kansas. It was there that she met Griff Hughes and they were married in June, 1963 and soon had two daughters, Jenifer and Nancy. In April, 1969 the family moved to Chickasha where Bettye considered herself fortunate to be a stay at home mom and wife. She became active in community activities such as PEO, the Sorosis Study Club, the League of Women Voters and Friends of the Library. She served on several boards and helped with numerous community activities such as Santa's Workshop, Emergency Food Pantry, Grady County Historical Society, Community Action Council and the Nutrition Program for Seniors. Bettye later worked as a substitute teacher prior to retirement which she and Griff enjoyed together. Several Scriptures were special to her, but some of her favorites were I Corinthians 13, the love chapter; Psalm 121, Romans 8:28 and Ecclesiastes 3. Bettye was a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
Bettye was preceded in death by her husband Griff Hughes; her parents Lula and Luther Rushing; brothers Versie, Decator and William Rushing; and sisters Lena Smith, Laurie Sisco and Patsy Ann Nations.
Bettye is survived by her daughters Jenifer Adams and Nancy Hughes; grandsons Justin and John Adams; sisters Frances Mullins and husband Billy, and Dianne Little; brother Donald Rushing and wife Lee; sister-in-law Sarah Lynn Rushing; brother-in-law Billy Nations; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the USAO Foundation or the Emergency Food Pantry. Services are under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.
