He was drafted January 23, 1946 into the United States Army, just after the end of World War II. He served in Korea, as one of the first troops to clear the way for other servicemen coming into Korea, and 25 years later his son, Horace Alexander, served in the same area and 50 years later his granddaughter, Kala Alexander, also served in Korea. John worked many jobs, including a car porter for Ralph and Sons Oldsmobile, maintenance for Pool Mortgage Company, and bartender at the Elks Lodge. In March 1965, he opened John's BBQ, his lifelong dream, with the support of his wife and children. For twenty-nine years he contributed to the community with his business and good-eats, retiring in 1994.
