Memorial services for LaVerne Powell, 82, of Chickasha will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Chickasha with Pastor Scott Keneda and Eston Leonard officiating.
LaVerne Powell was born September 19, 1934 in Orange, Texas to Arthur and Fannie Mae Witten. She passed from this earth to her heavenly home on September 9th, 2017.
LaVerne grew up in Mountain View, Oklahoma with 4 brothers and a sister and attended school there where she played basketball, softball, sand in her High School Quartet and was a drum major. She graduated in 1952.
LaVerne married LJ Powell on June 21st, 1952 in Hobart, Oklahoma with Reverend Hodges officiating and made their home in Wetherford. They would tell you they were married at 9:00 and were back in the cotton patch by 11:00. After they were married LaVerne worked at Forman's Cleaners to help LJ finish college so he could fulfill his dream of coaching.
The couple moved to Anadarko in 1954 where LaVerne was secretary at the hospital. They moved to Shiprock, New Mexico for 24hours (that's a story!) and then landed in Frederick, Oklahoma in 1957 where LJ coached and LaVerne worked at the Frederick Hospital as a secretary.
In 1958 they got a call from Chickasha which is where they always wanted to be and made their home there from that day forward. LaVerne had a small babysitting business and then got hired by Chickasha Public Schools where she worked until she retired in 1997. During that time she was "Mom" to hundreds of kids in addition to her own children.
She was preceded in death by both parents, her brothers, Curtis, Kenneth, Winfred and Doyle and her sister Pauline. She is survived by her husband, Coach LJ Powell of the home. Her daughter Belinda and Husband Bill Clay of Chickasha, her son Darryl Powell and Pam of Amber, and son Joe and wife Kim Powell of Chickasha. Grandchildren Jeremy and Savannah Roof of Purcell, Joshua and Sheri Roof of Blanchard, Jerrod and Amanda Roof of Moore, Macy and David Stanford of Oklahoma City, Colby and Dayna Powell of Oklahoma City, Nolan Powell of Oklahoma City and Walker Powell of Chickasha, Randy Powell of Amber. Eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and hundreds of students, athletes and friends that she thought of as family.
Friends can pay their respects at the Epworth United Methodist Church Chapel Columbarium. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chickasha Epworth United Methodist Women or the Epworth Chancel Choir, 420 West Iowa Ave., Chickasha, OK 73018.
