Rex's Story

Text size

Rex Payne passed peacefully from this life on the evening of December 27, after a gradual decline in health. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family, friends and caregivers during the last days of his life. Rex attended Drumright High School and graduated from Central State College before enlisting in the Air Force where he quickly became Captain and began flying an F-4 Phantom jet. He flew more than 200 sorties into Viet Nam during the war. After his time in the Air Force he bought Paw Paw's Hamburgers from his parents, Wayne and Juanita Payne. He later married Teresa Pugh and helped her raise her four daughters: Jonna, Tally, Tessa and Jaimy. He also helped raise his granddaughters Ollie and Karma and his grandson Quincy. Services for Rex were held on his birthday, Dec. 30, at the Southern Hills Baptist Church, Chickasha OK.
Rex is preceded in death by all of his grandparents; his father, Wayne Payne; his brother Lloyd; his nephew Joshua Jay; his father-in-law, Murl Pugh; his wife, Teresa; and his brother-in-law, John Pugh. Rex is survived by his mother, Juanita Payne; sisters Jacquetta Hampton, Sheila Raczynski and husband Ron, and Brother Gordon Payne and wife Pat; daughters Jonna Hurt and her husband Randall, Thalia Payne, Tessa Day and her husband Greg, and Jaimy Roberson and her husband Chris; grandchildren Randall Hurt, Jr., Alyssa Hurt, Amanda Hurt, Kamryn Hurt, CarlyJo Hurt, Julie-Kaye Hurt, Olivia Payne, Karma Payne, Quincy Payne, Derias Day, Jesse Day, Kyler Roberson and Jayci Roberson. He loved all his many neices and nephews and great-neices and great-nephews and he was very close to Viv Jones who spent many hours with him in his last days. He always had a kind word and a great big smile. We will never ever forget him.
