Shirley Welch

Events

Funeral services for Shirley Welch, age 87 of Chickasha, OK will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Trinity Baptist Church. Rev. Billy Elkins will officiate.
Shirley Welch was the youngest of 4 children born to W.J. and Emily Smith. She was born on October 6, 1931 in Frederick, Oklahoma. She died on August 1, 2019 at her home in Chickasha. Shirley married Alvah (Al) M. Welch, Jr. on May 3, 1947 in Sherman, Texas. Together they had five children: Alan, Phillip, David, Denise and Kent.
Shirley graduated from Tishomingo High School in 1948. She spent the next years of her life being a mom and homemaker. In 1967, she earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts, now USAO. After college, Shirley began teaching elementary school in the Chickasha school system. In 1977 she continued her education by earning a Masters Degree from the University of Oklahoma. She retired in 1992, after 25 years of teaching.
Anyone who knew Shirley knew she loved football. Not just any football, University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys. She shared her love of football with her children and grandchildren. Many hours were spent as a family in lively discussion and animated enjoyment of games. Shirley had many other interests. She spent hours outdoors gardening and watching the birds in her back yard. She had a love for reading, and in her later years especially enjoyed the writings of C.S. Lewis.
Shirley was a follower of Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church, Chickasha where she taught Sunday school for many years. Shirley never stopped learning. She read her Bible faithfully, studying the Scriptures to know and apply more and more to her life. Her faith and her burden for others to know Christ caused her to be very generous to organizations who minister to the needy while spreading the gospel. She often encouraged her family to give to these ministries rather than give her gifts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Shellman, one sister, Billie and two children, Alan and Phillip.
Survivors include: Children: David and wife, Lisa of Chickasha, Denise Wallace of Norman, Kent and wife Helen of Oklahoma city; daughter-in-law Vanda of Oklahoma city; brother Tom Smith of Denison, Texas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery. Service will be under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, Samaritan's Purse or Campus Crusade for Christ.

Mrs. Welch was my 5th grade home room teacher. I loved her dearly and just spoke of her recently to a co-worker during a discussion about teachers we remembered. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this difficult time. God bless you.

I only went to Chickasha Intermediate for half of my 5th grade year, but your mom was my homeroom teacher. I remember she was very pretty and also a good teacher. I am so very sorry for your loss. Prayers for your family.
