Virgil's Story

Funeral service for Virgil Melvin Harris, 96, formerly of Chickasha, Oklahoma, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2016 in the Central Assembly of God Church.
Virgil was born in Caddo County August 24, 1919 to Charlie Franks Harris and Alpha Susan Clift Harris. He passed away June 20, 2016 in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Virgil was raised in Cement, Oklahoma. During World War II, he worked in the shipyard in Oakland, California as a pipefitter. Virgil moved back to Cement and met his wife, Zella Belle Wood Walker, working at the Cement Drug Store. They were married March 9, 1946 in Duncan, Oklahoma and celebrated 70 years of marriage this year. Virgil and Zella operated Texaco and Apco Stations, and the Cement Hotel and Laundry. In 1951, they sold and moved to West Texas where Virgil began working in the oil field. In 1952, they moved to Kansas; 1953 to Aztec, New Mexico; 1967 to Farmington, New Mexico. He retired with WKM Wellhead Systems as manager in 1984.
Virgil was converted in The Chapel of the Valley Church May 5, 1985 in Farmington, New Mexico. Virgil and Zella moved to Chickasha in 1986. They attended Grand Ave. Assembly of God Church under Rev. Larry Hatfield. On January 31, 1994, Virgil was baptized by Rev. Hatfield. Virgil helped in the building of the new Grand Assembly Church. In 2009, Virgil and Zella moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma, to be near their daughter, Charlene and husband Charles Ashcraft and also granddaughter Charla and husband Paul Hursh. Virgil and Zella attended Calvary Baptist Church under Rev. David Corley. Virgil's son, Mel, called every morning from Washington state to check on his dad and mom.
Survivors include his wife Zella; daughter Charlene Walker Ashcraft and husband Charles; son Melvin L Harris and wife Debra; five grandchildren John Ashcraft and wife Sandra, Charla Hursh and husband Paul, Michele Harris, Jaime Zwiefelhofer and husband Jay, and Rebecca Holcombe and husband Philip; six great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; sister Elaine Felton; sister-in-law Lorene Harris; special niece and nephew Pauline and Carl Mahan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Alpha Harris; brothers Lee and Bobby Harris; sisters Eva Hammond, Daphene Dacus and Velma Jones.
Interment will be in the Cement Cemetery under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
