Dr. William Smith Harrison
Memorial service for Dr. William Smith Harrison, 90, of Chickasha, OK will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church in Chickasha, OK.
Dr. William Smith Harrison was born the son of George Washington Harrison and Juliet (Ahrens) Harrison on October 14, 1927 in Tulsa, OK. He died on February 11, 2018 in Oklahoma City.
Dr. Harrison was born in Tulsa and attended high school in Sand Springs, OK. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 with a degree in pharmacy. He attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and received his M.D. degree in 1953. He married Camille Porch on June 19, 1953 in Dearborn, MI. Dr. Harrison returned to the University of Michigan for his internship and following that received a one year residency in neurology from the same institution. From 1955 through 1957 Dr. Harrison was assigned to the U.S. Air Force, Parks Air Force Base, California in the department of neurology and served for a portion of that time as chief of the neurology service. Following his service in the Air Force he again returned to the University of Michigan where he spent two years in the department of internal medicine finishing in August of 1959 as a junior clinical instructor.
Dr. Harrison came to Chickasha in 1959 to serve the people of Grady County at what was then The Chickasha Clinic, now Southern Plains Medical Center. He cared for his patients there for 33 years. After his retirement he served on the board of Grady Memorial Hospital from 1993 to 2010 and also volunteered at Access Health. Dr. Harrison was a Rotarian and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chickasha. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America with his sons. He was an avid collector of model trains and all things railroad. He enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the U.S. and he love photography, with many of his photographs published. He enjoyed gardening and his passion was roses. However, the most important things to Dr. Harrison were his family, friends and the many patients he cared for over the years.
Dr. Harrison was preceded in death by his parents George and Juliet Harrison, his wife Camille Harrison and one son, Paul Harrison.
He is survived by his son Joel Harrison of Norman, OK; daughter Beth Mann and Craig of Brownsburg, IN; sister Kathryn Madsen of Holmdel, NJ; and grandchildren William Harrison and Hailey Harrison of Wichita Falls, TX and Lauren Mann of Brownsburg, IN.
Viewing will be on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Services are under the direction of McRay Funeral Home. Private interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
