Carl R. Phelps
Service for Carl R. Phelps, age 65 of Chickasha, will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at the Southern Oaks Church of Christ.
Carl grew up in Carnegie through the 7th grade where he rode in many rodeos doing square dance on horseback and playday events.  He finished junior high and high school in Moore, Oklahoma where he was co-captain of a State Semi-finalist basketball team in the Big House.  He attended Christian College of the Southwest in Mesquite, TX for 1 year on a basketball scholarship after which he received his baccalaureate degree from Oklahoma State University and then his masters degree from OU.  While attending OU, he was the 1st Coach of Okie Spokesmen (a wheelchair basketball team).  In 1977, he married the love of his life, Janice Jennings, to whom he was married for 40 years.  Coaching was a passion and his favorite was coaching his daughters Jennifer and Cara in softball and basketball.  He was Superintendent of Schools in Paoli, Purcell, and Chickasha and was selected in 1985 as one of the Top 100 Up and Coming School Superintendents in North America.  In 1988, he developed Christian Care Retirement Village which he owned and operated for 16 and a half years.  Working side by side with his wife Janice, he was named Oklahoma's Nursing Home Administrator of the Year in 2001.  In 1985, with Janice's grandpa and Carl's best friend, he started a coffee club that is now 32 years old and running. In 1993 he co-founded one of the most successful Investment Clubs in the world which is now 24 years old and received a #1 ranking in the world in 2006.  It always received the highest rank in Oklahoma for 10 years or so until the competition ceased.  Carl was a referee and co-founded the Chickasha Officials Association which he coordinated and presided over for its first 10 years until ALS prevented him from continuing.  The highlight of his referee career was officiating in the All-State game at Tulsa in 2016.  In 2011 Carl and Janice started the Phelps Pharm where they had lived since 1993.  With nearly 100 farm animals that he loved, they hosted countless church groups, school groups, friend groups and family groups on their most fun Pharm.  Carl and Janice traveled to all 50 states with Jennifer and Cara.  They entertained in one nursing home in all 77 counties of Oklahoma from August to October 2005. They also visited most of the world as well, going to countries in 5 of 7 continents. While on his journey with ALS, he proudly served as a beta tester for VisuALS Technology Solutions.
Carl was a member of the Southern Oaks Church of Christ where he was faithful to attend all services and served where he could.
He was preceded in death by his mother Geraldine Phelps, father Robert K. Phelps, sister Phyllis Cutrer, and sister-in-law Margaret Ann Berry.
He is survived by his loving wife Janice Phelps; Daughter and Son-in-law Jennifer and Steve Driskill and their children Emma and Drake; Daughter and Son-in-law Cara and Brian Gerdes and their children Drue and Arden; brothers-in-law Cliff Cutrer and Joe Berry; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Issy Jennings; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Patti Hesser; 5 nephews, 3 nieces, and many other family members that he dearly loved.
