Hollis E Myers was born September 2nd, 1929 in Mead, Oklahoma to Lee A. Myers and Sallie McKamey.
He spent most of his youth working on farms and the resort areas of Lake Texhoma.
After graduating high school he served in the Navy for four years. During this time he met India Inez Lucas who he married on June 14, 1953. Upon his separation from the Navy he and Inez returned to the Bryan County, Oklahoma area where he began his path toward becoming an educator by attending college at Southeastern State in Durant, Oklahoma and North Texas State College in Denton, Texas. Hollis eventually earned a Doctorate degree in education and went on to become an Oklahoma Secondary School administrator.
During his career in education he coached many successful high school basketball and baseball teams including a Class C State Championship with Woodland High School in 1959. Many of his athletes achieved All Star status at various levels with some going on to play college sports. Many were still friends and kept in contact with him throughout his life.
Hollis retired from public education in 1985 and had been the Superintendent at Verden High School for 17 years.
After his retirement from the public education sector Hollis went on to manage the Chickasha Elks Lodge in Chickasha for many years. Elk Dom was a big part of his retired life as he participated in many Elk events nationwide even, being nationally recognized for some of his efforts.
Hollis was preceded in death by his parents, 11 brother and sisters, as well as one son Terrance Lee Myers who passed in 1995, his wife India Inez who passed in 2013, his daughter Melody Elizabeth Myers who passed in 2014. He is survived by one son Hollis E. Myers II (Buddy), a granddaughter Heather Nicole Myers Rosen, two grandsons and a host of friends that he considered his family.
Hollis passed peacefully in his sleep November 25th, 2016 after choosing not to fight a long difficult battle with several illnesses. Hollis lived his life on his terms enjoying every minute and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at the Verden Community Center on Sunday, December 11th, 2016 form 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. this will be a come and go event for a time of remembrance by friends and family. In lieu of flowers, plants, etc. please make a donation to your favorite charity or someone less fortunate as a pay it forward gesture on behalf of Hollis E. Myers.
