Janis Nell Stephens was born October 6th 1945 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to William Henry and Willie Creal Stephens. She passed away May 5th 2017 at the age of 71 years in Edmond, Oklahoma due to complications caused by radiation to the lung. She attended Friend and Ninnekah Public Schools. She married George Wesley Burns on May 11th, 1962 unto which 3 children were born.
In her younger years, she worked on an egg farm and did secretarial work for insurance and oil companies. Her passion for helping others led her to a career in home health. Janis took care of others for 30 years, being not only an exceptional care giver to her patients, but their loyal friend. She had a love for animals and was an active member of the humane society. She passionately dedicated her time and resources in adopting and preparing dogs for rehoming, saving approximately 200 dogs in her lifetime. She also enjoyed feeding and watching birds and tending to her plants, especially her flowers. She took great pride in the excellent care she provided to people, animals and plants.
She was an avid reader and writer and could almost always be found with a book. She loved and cherished spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed playing cards and drinking coffee and collecting antiques, fishing and being outdoors. She gave herself selflessly to her family, friends and animals, always putting others first. She was her loved ones' biggest advocate, cheerleader, supporter, and friend. She gave more than she ever received, cared deeply and loved unconditionally. She will be missed incredibly by her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents William Henry, Willie Creal, sister Elaine Ruth Baxter, brothers Donald Dwain Stephens, Charles Henry Stephens. Survivors include sons Wesley Dean Burns of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Phillip Kerry Burns and wife Lori of Tuttle, Oklahoma, daughter Raina Hamlin and husband Rick of Chickasha, Oklahoma. 5 grandchildren, Harrison Kole Burns, Zachary Dean Burns, Derrelyn Rae Lamb, Kerry Janell Allen and Weston Pryce Pelzer. 3 great-grandchildren Kamryn, Kinsly and Kolton Burns. Brothers Robert Stephens, James Stephens. Along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Janis requested no flowers and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Lung Association, Donation Processing Center PO Box 7000 Albert Lea, MN. 56007 and or thru website. There will be no funeral service due to her donating herself to the United Tissue Network. Her celebration of life will be held at a later date.
