Martha E. Reed, 101, Lawton passed away Friday, March 17, 2017 at her home in Lawton. She was born October 13, 1915 in Laverty, Oklahoma to Hubert Luther and Mary Tryphena (Steele) Edens. She was raised by loving parents on a farm west of Chickasha. She had three siblings, one of whom was lost to the flu when the whole family contracted the illness in the early 1900's. She lived through the "Dust Bowl" and "Great Depression" and graduated from Pioneer School in the early '30s. She married Autry I. Reed on December 12, 1934 in Cement, OK. He passed away July 3, 1990. Together they traveled the country, living mostly in Texas when he enlisted in the military during WW II. She became a nurse, and spent ten years in the operating room. She was an avid piano player. She learned from an early age, as her daddy traded a plow for an organ, so she and her sister could learn to play. She took pride in playing jazzy entertainment for her fellow residents at Ten Oaks. She was often musical accompaniment for local pastors who visited the facility to lead worship services. Her advice to the younger generation was simple: "Go through life being honest and being kind to your neighbors." In addition, she said, family and faith should be top priorities.
Survivors include numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces: Melvin McGuffin and wife Barbara, Stephen and Jo Ann McGuffin, Jordan McGuffin, Sean Christopher, Summer Elizabeth and Lillian Sophia, Mark and Tammi McGuffin, Cameron McGuffin and Shelby McGuffin, Debra Dae McGuffin, Gwen Sosnowski, Jason, Daley and Alexis Lloyd, Carol Jan Law, Beth Law, Blake, Caleb, Bart Law and Matt Law.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, husband, and a nephew Hubert McGuffin and his wife Mary Ann.
