Nancy's Story

Text size

Nancy was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on December 14, 1956. Her parents, Jay and Vi Hammons surrounded Nancy with unconditional love and a wonderful childhood filled with many blessings. She had two brothers, Jim and Tim Hammons. The three of them spent most of their childhood at their family home east of Chickasha riding horses, doing chores, working and growing together.
Nancy attended Friend School through fifth grade and then transferred to Chickasha and graduated in 1975. Nancy attended USAO and worked at Ted Bingham's Tax Services in Anadarko for several years after graduation.
Nancy was introduced to the rodeo life at an early age; she and her brothers learned how to rope and ride and helped with their family business at Jay's Arena. From this exposure she fell in love with the rodeo world and started participating in the Women's Professional Rodeo Association. Nancy was the 1981 Women's World Champion in Team Roping.
In the early 1980's Nancy moved to Dallas, Texas and began a new career at US Telecom, now known as Sprint Communications. Nancy was a key player in the implementation of their Fiber Optic Network and their Credit Card Billing System. She relocated to Kansas City in 1985 and continued working at Sprint until her retirement in 2001, Nancy then returned to her home town of Chickasha, Oklahoma and became a Communications Officer with the City of Chickasha until retiring in 2013.
Nancy loved family and was the best aunt and great-aunt imaginable, she loved her niece, nephews and their children deeply. She also loved her friends and although she never had children of her own, she was like a mom to Audrey and Lindsay Bennington, daughters of close friend Patti Bennington.
Nancy was very smart, artistic, outspoken, determined, honest, selfless, and a friend to the end. She was always willing to help family and friends whenever possible. She loved unconditionally just as she had been loved. Nancy's faith in Christ was strong and true; she was well prepared and ready to enter heaven's gate on Friday, September 9, 2016.
Nancy is survived by her mother, Vi Hammons of the home, one brother and his wife, Jim and Sandy Hammons of Chickasha, their two sons, Shawn Hammons of Austin, Texas and Shane Hammons, his wife, Jessica and their daughter, Cruz of Chickasha, her nephew, Chad Hammons and his daughter, Bailee Hammons of Chickasha and one niece, Shollie Prichard, and husband, Ryan Prichard, son, Tim Hammons and daughter, Karlie Hammons of Chickasha.
