Penhook, VA - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Thomas Riley, who left this world on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the age of 60. Born on August 31, 1965, in Alameda, California, John later made his home in the peaceful community of Penhook, Virginia.

A proud veteran, John cherished his time serving in the United States Army as a member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He began his tenure as a skilled shipbuilder before earning a place on the esteemed "Tiger Team" and eventually transitioning into C300 Work Integration, Quality Assurance. John retired from government service in February of 2025, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and technical expertise.

John was a man of many passions. He found freedom on the open road riding his motorcycle and joy in traveling, music, and the simple pleasure of "puttering" around the house, always finding something to tinker with or improve. He was also a lifelong learner, recently dedicated to mastering the guitar. Above all, John was a lover of animals. His "furry children"- cats, Monkey, Moofie, and Ms. Kitty, and dogs, Lil Bit and Coco, who were his constant companions. He now joins his beloved pets who preceded him in death: cats, Darla and Spanky, and dogs, Sasha and Chewie.

John's greatest devotion was to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, Helen Riley, who describes him as her "heart, soul, and everything." He was her riding partner, best friend, and the answer to her prayers.

He is also survived by his stepmother, Joyce Marie Riley, who raised him and whom he considered his "real Mom;" his stepdaughters, Hope (Jeff) Lineberry of Mauldin, SC, and Kara M. Blankenship of Roanoke, VA; and his stepson, Jesse (Morgan) Gettings of Houston, TX.

His legacy continues through his step-grandchildren, Michaela Lineberry, Alexis Blankenship, Aurora Owensby, Riley Johnson, Serena Batista-Gettings, Skylar Blankenship, Jeffery Lineberry Jr., Tyler (Harmony) Blankenship, Korrey (Mariah) Blankenship, and Gabriel Batista-Gettings. He also leaves behind his siblings, Anthony (Tarah) Riley, Jason (Erin) Hood, Teranie (Troy Williams) Riley, George Bice, and Marie Rohner-Talton, along with numerous nieces and nephews who adored their "Uncle John."

John was preceded in death by his father, Vern T. Riley; his biological mother, Joan Bundock; his stepdaughter, Brandi Owensby; and several aunts and uncles.

John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a man of service, a pillar of strength for his family, and a friend to every creature he met.
