Richard Dale "Rick" Story passed away at his home Tuesday April 1, 2025, with his family at his side. He was born March 16, 1949, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the son of Mona Rae "Topsy" and Bobby Dale "Bob" Story. He graduated from Alex High School in 1967.
Rick Story loved people. His genuine interest in people was obvious and he made it a point to meet and get to know people everywhere he went. He continually initiated conversations with strangers he met and ended up making new friends. His positive attitude was so consistent that even through the months of chemotherapy treatments, significant pain and limitations he continued to say, "Every day is a good day." He chose daily to focus on something positive.
Rick was an active member of Lawton First United Methodist Church for many years and served on several committees, but his favorite job there was being an official greeter every Sunday morning. He loved making people feel welcomed, shaking hands, and giving away smiles.
As a gifted craftsman, Rick loved working with wood, making toy boxes, cradles, bird houses and a variety of other projects. He took pride in his yardwork and enjoyed growing giant sunflowers that would tower over his 6 foot fence and brighten a large corner of his yard. He particularly enjoyed fishing at the family's pond with his son and daughter-in-law. Rick was very proud of his adult children and their spouses. He loved to talk about the various work they did and the wonderful grandkids they had raised.
As a young man, Rick served in the Oklahoma National Guard and began his career by owning and operating a collection agency in Chickasha. He managed an additional collection agency in Wichita Falls, Texas. After moving to Wichita Falls, he joined KAUZ CBS Channel 6 as a salesman and started his volunteer work with the Red Cross there. He and his family moved to Lawton in 1979 where he entered the auto industry.
Following his years in the auto industry, he felt he found his true calling as a recruiter for the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Rick had been consistently passionate about donating blood for many years and had literally donated numerous gallons of blood in his efforts to help people who needed it. He spent several years making contacts all over the state and setting up blood drives. Rick saw this job as a special opportunity to help people who were unable to help themselves. Following his retirement, he enjoyed investing in and maintaining rental property.
His positive attitude and smile will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of the home; three children Leslie Jo (Rick) Osborn of Oklahoma City, Kelly Wade (April) Story of Holliday, Texas, and Bobbi Rae (Clay) Miller of Yukon; Sandy's two daughters, Lindsey Morris and Shelly Horn of Lawton, two sisters, Robbie (Gary) Mullins of Tecumseh, and Terry (Dale) Adams of Ninnekah; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; as well as many extended relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Caleb, and niece, Tera.
